Is Your Child Overmedicated?

There is controversy over whether ADHD is overmedicated, and the potential for overdiagnosis and misdiagnosis is high: 

• Overdiagnosis - Some studies suggest that ADHD is overdiagnosed, especially in children who are younger or have milder symptoms. For example, children with behavioral problems that are due to age may be misdiagnosed with ADHD. 
• Overtreatment - A 2021 study found that only 32% of children with ADHD receive the recommended combination of medication and behavioral treatment. 
• Medication side effects - ADHD medications, such as methylphenidate and amphetamine, can be abused and have reinforcing effects similar to cocaine. Some children have experienced violent behavior and psychotic episodes after being prescribed ADHD medication. 
• Effectiveness - While some experts say medication is an effective treatment for ADHD, it's not always the best option. 

Some causes of overdiagnosis include poor diagnostic practices, changes in diagnostic thresholds, and pharmaceutical industry advertising.  Help us inform and educate about this important subject!
